Classic Columns offers Architects and Builders and anyone involved with the restoration of Historic Homes and period properties the chance to have designed and made authentic solid wood columns that either match perfectly existing structures or new columns that strictly accord with The Ancient Orders of Architecture.
Although it is often tempting to replace perishing existing wood columns with cheaper modern variants that are made from composite materials and struck in a mould, this solution is far from perfect. It almost certainly means that there will have to be some compromise in design and often it means making columns of slightly the wrong proportion fit. This is most certainly not the preferred option of conservationists or the discerning.
However, there are ways of producing timber columns of high load bearing capacity that are produced using a timber species, depending on its purpose, that can be laminated together using modern PU adhesives to form a stable block suitable for turning which will be defect free and able to take stain and a variety of wood finishes and will last for many years.
With a modern numerically controlled lathe it is possible to turn any shaped column up to 3.4mts long by approximately 48cm in section, which means that almost all existing timber columns can be accurately replicated.
